Sussex County libraries are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But, internet access at those locations is still available.
The county’s fourteen libraries are adding “parking lot” WiFi hotspots to serve their respective communities.
Sussex County librarian Kathy Graybeal said those locations ensure access is widely and easily available.
“Hand-in hand with those who need access who may not have at home quite often also don’t have transportation,” Graybeal said. “So, being able to have these community libraries in town makes a tremendous difference.”
Graybeal said rural residents heavily depend on libraries for computer access and this helps them to continue to meet those needs.
“As all of those computer stores closed down, I think it was said very well that we were considered this a utility,” Graybeal said. “So, we have become the default and then embraced it, the technology centers for the community.”
Graybeal said the county put signal amplifiers on the exterior of the libraries to allow their current set-up to provide consistent service outside. Twelve hotspots were installed last week. Rehoboth Library is expected to be up and running by Tuesday. Milford’s signal will be installed by Kent County.
The WiFi hotspots are available between 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sussex County reminds anyone using them must maintain proper social distancing.
