Goldberg Variations #23

The Delaware Division of the Arts’ Mezzanine Gallery in Wilmington host a new exhibition this month.

The exhibit is called“The Goldberg Variations:  32 Miniatures Based on Bach’s Keyboard Masterpiece” and was created by Newark resident Gregg Silvis.

Silvis says the exhibition is a series of 32 miniatures based on a composition for harpsichord by J.S. Bach, the Goldberg Variations.

“The works involve a number of different techniques," said Silvis. "So, I’ve done things, like I’ve used mirrors, I’ve used gold leaf and silver leaf; one of the variations - I’m a fan of the Matrix movie and I used the font from the beginning the Matrix movie. I’ve graphed the notes.”

Silvis says he created an 8 X 8-inch work for each of the variations. And he hopes people who see them get some insight into what Bach was trying to do, “And have some connection between the visual representation of the music and the oral representation of the music.”

The exhibit is on display through November 27, 2019 at the Mezzanine Gallery - located on the second floor of the Carvel State Office Building in downtown Wilmington.
