First State moves to expand COVID testing options

Expanded COVID-19 testing is coming to Delaware in the coming weeks.

Five more Walgreens in the First State will offer testing next week.

Delaware Emergency Management Agency Director AJ Schall says other testing will also be expanded.

"We'll also be working on deploying some of the National Guard resources we've used as help at our drive-thru testing sites to state service centers to have a more comprehensive 8 through 4 type of model to get tested," Schall said.

Schall adds that some at-home tests used for school staff will become available to the general public.

"We're going to use this to identify people over the age of 60 or people who might not have transportation," said Schall. "They go online, register and request a test kit be sent to their house to do the kit on Zoom with one of the medical providers, drop it off at a UPS box to get the results in about 24 to 48 hours. So we're going to be expanding that to about a thousand people a day as well sometime in the next 7 to 10 days."

10,000 at-home tests have already been provided to teachers and school staff, and according to Gov. John Carney about 7,000 have been used.

Schall points out daily testing volume in Delaware dropped last month before picking up in recent weeks as schools and universities start up a new year.
