Dover Police Chief retires, acting chief named

Delaware Public Media

The Dover Police Department is about to see a change in leadership. Police Chief Marvin Mailey is retiring next month.

Chief Mailey officially steps down May 17after two years on the job and 26 years with the Dover Police Department.

Mayor Robin Christiansen says Mailey accomplished a lot during his tenure as chief.

“He has firmed up community policing and initiated some additional cameras in the Department, said Christiansen. "He has bolstered our cadet program and he has actively been seen in the community as our Chief.”

Christiansen says Deputy Chief, Major Tim Stump will serve as acting chief while the city searches for a new permanent police chief.

Stump has been with the Department for 26 years and he’s been Deputy Chief for the past two years.

Christiansen says he doesn’t foresee Stump making any changes.

“I would hope that the status quo stands until we have Chief Mailey’s successor on board,” said Christiansen.

Christiansen adds the search for a new chief will not start until September after the City completes its reorganization and budget for 2020.

The plan is to hire a new chief by November or December.
