Delaware State Police is looking for the person that came to its headquarters in Dover Monday night and spray painted the words, “Black Lives Matter” on a memorial for troopers killed in the line of duty.
Elanor Allione is the president of the Delaware chapter of Concerns Of Police Survivors, an organization supporting those who have lost a family member in law enforcement. She appeals to those committing acts of vandalism.
“My heart hurts for those who can’t find the good in their lives, for those who can’t reach out for a helping hand in the right way, instead of defacing our memorials.”
The state Law Enforcement Memorial was vandalized last week. A Camden man was arrested Saturday - accused of damaging the neck of the kneeling officer statue there with an ax.
Delaware State Troopers Association President Lt. Thomas Brackin said the organization is committed to sitting down with lawmakers to discuss what they can do to support the black community.
“We have worked diligently with members of our legislature on those areas of concern as it relates to criminal justice reform and some of the very things we’re seeing outlined by Delaware's Black Legislative Caucus. We are again willing to sit down and have meaningful and substantive discussion.”
The Delaware Legislative Black Caucus recently unveiled its agenda to tackle systemic racism and police brutality. One of the reforms on the agenda is body camera requirements. Delaware State Police is one of the few police departments in the state that still does not have body cameras.
