Arts Playlist: Delaware Art Museum's virtual programming

Delaware Public Media

The Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington is ramping up its virtual programming as it remains closed during the coronavirus crisis.

The museum has been shuttered since mid-March.

And its director of learning and engagement Saralyn Rosenfield says the goal has been to find ways to make scheduled programming virtual.

"We had everything from family programs, which we were offering regularly every month on the second Sunday and storybook programs on Fridays," said Rosenfield. "We also had performances that were planned. And we had a whole slate of studio classes that we were going to do.”

Rosenfield says staff worked closely with the Museum’s teaching artists to make these activities accessible online.

Rosenfield says much of it is free and family friendly, including opportunities to engage with artists.

“We’re working with our teaching artists to create demos of their artwork from home. And since many of them are showing us their studio and showing us how they’re making things in their own homes, we’re also doing virtual studio tours," said Rosenfield. "Some artists have agreed - local artists have agreed to show us their studios.”

Rosenfield says they are also doing “watch parties” where local performers are highlighted once a month on Friday for about 30 minutes.

There’s also a host of art activities and an array of children’s literature on the Museum’s Facebook page that’s kid-friendly.

More information is also available at the Delaware Art Museum’s website.

A few of the Mueum's latest offerings:

 -       Virtual Watch Parties highlight a selection of gifted musicians from the region. Performances are 20 minutes each and range from jazz and R&B to algorithmic composition with audio-visual correspondence. During performances, artists will be available to answer questions and provide insight into their creative processes.

-       Glory of Stories is a story time series including a children’s book reading, an art activity that can be done at home, and a Museum work of art.

-       Art Making for both Kids and Adults is a series of art projects taught by Museum Studio instructors.
