Delaware farmers could benefit from new NAFTA deal

Delaware Public Media

The new trade agreement between the U.S. and Mexico and Canada could clear the way to new markets for farmers in Delaware.

President Trump announced the deal replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement earlier this week.

Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester said she’s still concerned for Delaware producers hit by the Trump administration’s trade war with U.S. allies, including Mexico and Canada.

Blunt Rochester said aspects also include getting Canada to open up its dairy market, and giving Canada greater access to some U.S. markets crucial to the First State.

“We are encouraged by the fact that you know poultry markets could be opened up and will have a great impact on Delaware potentially," she said. “Opening up you know poultry and eggs to Canada. I mean again, those are things that we’re really paying attention to, especially here on our ag community.”

Blunt Rochester said her office is still reading the agreement to better understand its impact locally.

She adds it’s unlikely Congress will approve the new trade deal before the end of the year. The governments of Canada and Mexico also must sign off.
