Sussex County has won $7 million in federal funding for transportation improvements.
This is the first time Sussex County has gotten a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant, or TIGER grant.
State Rep. Ruth Briggs King said the money will go to the Georgetown East Gateway project. She said that will improve the intersection at US 9, Airport Road and Sand Hill Road.
“So, this one will help out and some major intersections just outside of Delaware that connects people with the CHEER Center as a well as a school and the Emergency Center at the airport and everything else,” she said.
Briggs King said the planned improvements include roadway realignment, additional turn lanes and sidewalks.
She said the TIGER grant will help address current problems with the intersection.
“You know, you sort of have to go to the side in this intersection now," she said. "You can’t make right turns coming out of the One and you hold up traffic if you’re trying to make a left turn.”
The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is seeking public feedback on possible intersection improvements. A workshop is planned for June 11th from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sussex Academy-Cafeteria in Georgetown.
Construction is scheduled to start in 2020.
