DelDOT suspends lane closures ahead of Memorial Day holiday

Delaware Public Media

If you are hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend, you’ll have one less thing to worry about on your drive.

Delaware’s Department of Transportation is suspending construction-related lane closures over the long Memorial Day holiday weekend.

DelDOT community relations director C.R. McLeod says its a move the agency always makes around holidays to accommodate   the influx of traffic throughout the State, especially heading to Sussex County and the beaches:

“So what we’ll do is, for short-term projects that require lane closures such as paving work and things of that nature, we pause those projects to eliminate as many bottlenecks as we can over

the long holiday weekend,” said McLeod.

McLeod says on-going sustained lane shifts and/or lane closures may still be in effect in certain areas.

He says motorists should stay alert and should exercise caution as heavy holiday traffic is anticipated.

“Overall, we want to make sure that the traveling public is able to get to where they’re wanting to go as easily as possible," said McLeod. "So we do pause a majority of our projects during the course of the holiday weekend.”

The suspension of lane closures runs from 12:01 a.m. Thursday until 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, May 29.

McLeod suggests downloading DelDOT’s mobile app, which offers real-time traffic conditions.
