Wagner won't run again for State Auditor

Delaware Public Media

Delaware will have a new State Auditor for the first time in nearly three decades following this November’s election.

Republican Tom Wagner says he will not seek another term. The 62-year-old Wagner has been state auditor since he was appointed to the post in 1989.

Wagner cites health concerns that will require him to eventually have a kidney transplant as the reason for his decision.

“It would not be fair to the citizens of Delaware or the Republican Party to run for re-election knowing that I cannot dedicate 110% of my time and energy to this critical role in state government," said Wagner in a statement.

He was most recently re-elected in 2014, defeating Democrat Brenda Mayrack by a 54 to 46 percent margin for a seventh elected term.

"There is no higher calling then public service and, for three decades, I have had the humbling privilege of serving the citizens of Delaware as their State Auditor. I would like to thank the voters of Delaware for their trust during my time in office," he added in his statement.

Two Democrats have already announced they are running for state auditor. Former State Rep. Dennis E. Williams and Rehoboth Beach Commissioner Kathy McGuiness have filed and are expected to face off in a September primary.
