State Sen. Colin Bonini wins Republican nomination for governor

Delaware Public Media

State Sen. Colin Bonini has won the Republican nomination for governor in Delaware. He beat opponent Lacey Lafferty, taking 70 percent of votes cast in the race.

Bonini will face off against the Democratic nominee for governor John Carney in November. Carney is the favorite to win the election, since Delaware is a heavily Democratic state. But Bonini says he thinks First State voters are ready for change.

“My contention is that if you like how things are you should vote for John [Carney]. If you would like to change things I’m kindly asking for your vote. And I think people are ready for change so they’re going to give us good honest look and I think we have a chance, I really do,” Bonini said.

Bonini said he’s ready for an uphill battle heading into the November election. He said he’s going to spend the next few weeks meeting with voters and getting his message out.

This is Bonini’s second bid for statewide office. He ran for state treasurer in 2010 and narrowly lost to Democrat Chip Flowers.
