State Sen. Bethany Hall-Long (D-Middletown) is ramping up her run for Lt. Governor. Hall-Long filed paperwork to enter the race last month – but officially launched her campaign Friday.

Hall-Long says she’s the right person to assist the next governor in leading the First State.

"Delaware is facing unprecedented challenges with our economy and our budget and the governor really needs someone with leadership skills," said Hall-Long. "And I feel strongly that my legislative experience and my private and non-profit sector work will truly be able to assist the next governor with these challenges."

Hall-Long has served in the General Assembly since 2003, and as a State Senator for the Middletown area since 2009.   She’s also a registered nurse and University of Delaware professor.

Hall-Long is part of a crowed field of Democrats seeking the post.

Kent County Commissioner Brad Eaby and Rehoboth Beach Commissioner Kathy McGuinness are also running, along withformer Sussex County Register of Wills Greg Fuller and current New Castle County Register of Wills Ciro Poppitti.

But Hall-Long believes her experience, including her time at Legislative Hall sets her apart.

"I know how to work across the aisle and I know how to get things accomplished. I have the experience that matters and the leadership skills necessary," said Hall-Long in a Friday interview with Delaware Public Media. "The role of Lt. Governor really is important.  That’s why you have so many people running for this office, but we need a person with the leadership and background and the ability to hit the ground running."

Hall-Long adds she’ll focus on issues such as jobs, health-care costs, and crime during the race.

Her campaign says Hall-Long has already won the endorsements of state Senate President Pro Tem Patricia Blevins (D-Elsmere), Joint Finance Committee co-Chair State Rep. Melanie George Smith (D-Bear) and Middletown mayor Ken Branner.

The Lt. Governor’s office has been empty since January. That’s when Matt Denn left to become Attorney General after winning the AG’s race last November.

No Republicans have announced they are running yet.
