The Delaware State Chamber of Commerce and The Partnership, Inc., recently announced this year’s John H. Taylor Jr. Education Leadership award winner.

Sussex County’s John Hollis is receiving the honor this year.

Hollis is the founder and director of MERIT, Minority Educational Regional Incentive Training.  The program works with young minority men and women, helping them explore various science disciplines, with an eye toward pursuing them in college

Hollis says having his work on this initiative recognized means a lot.

“What it means is, I think it’s a recognition of teamwork. We’ve had a team of folks, including Delmarva Power, the Department of Education Commission on Higher Ed  have also supported a program that started in 1974,” said Hollis.

So far, 370 MERIT alumni have earned college degrees. That’s about 97% of its participants.

The John H. Taylor Jr. Education Leadership Award recognizes someone for providing sustained leadership in advancing Delaware education.

Hollis is also a longtime administrator, teacher and coach in the Seaford School District and served as Senior VP of the Delaware Community Foundation.

Hollis will be presented with the honor at the Superstars in Education Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 14th at Wilmington University’s Doberstein Admissions Center Auditorium.
