New study spotlights DSU's economic impact in Delaware

Delaware Public Media

Officials at Delaware State University just released a new study detailing the University’s impact on state and local economies.

The study shows DSU spurred $235 million of economic activity in the state in 2016.  The state of Delaware appropriated about $40.5 million to the university that same year. Additionally, DSU’s economic impact is up $28 million from the last time the study was conducted in 2005.

DSU spokesperson Carlos Holmes says this data speaks to the overall health of the University and to its standing among other historically black universities.

“You know, there’s a lot of HBCU’s that are out there struggling, but Delaware State University can’t say that. We’re doing pretty well here,” said Holmes.

In 2016, DSU employed 299 faculty members, 750 staff members and 858 students. Those workers were paid almost $77 million in wages and benefits.

Holmes says planned construction on a 600-bed residential facility on DSU’s campus will promote even more economic activity this year.

“The economic impact of such a construction project will be great in terms of the number of construction jobs it will help create, the materials that are purchased by the university and also accommodating more students,” said Holmes.

The study was conducted by The University of Delaware’s Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research.
