President Biden announced he’s appointing Gov. John Carney to his Council of Governors.
Carney’s appointment joins nine other governors, Democrats and Republicans, from all parts of the country on the panel.
The council is designed to strengthen partnerships between federal and state governments and help the president and states work together on issues of national security such as extreme weather, terrorism and pandemics.
That includes improving communication between federal agencies and state ones, like the National Guard.
Various federal agencies related to national security, like the Department of Defense, FEMA and Homeland Security, also participate on the council.
In a statement, Carney thanked Biden for appointing him and noted the past year has shown just how important state and federal cooperation is during crisis situations such as COVID-19.

All of the governors are new appointments save for Lee, whose term expires in 2022.
