Veterans and military supporters gather to retire American flags

David Pinder/Comcast

A group of veterans and military supporters gathered Monday in New Castle County, to ceremoniously retire hundreds of American flags.

The flags were collected this past year as part of Comcast’s Veterans Network (VetNet) Flag Program, which it started two years ago.

“We retired over 200 flags that we had replaced in the New Castle County community, which we do as a community outreach program through our veterans network here at Comcast,” said David Pinder, a Comcast employee and local resident, who started the VetNet Program.

He noted, “We look for worn, tattered or faded flags in the communities that we serve and whether they’re a Comcast customer or not, we offer to replace them free of charge.”

Pinder - a Navy veteran himself - says the program means a lot to him, “The fact that the company would support this and it’s - you know - something that I can be proud of each day. You know, we all look for ways that we can take pride in what we do.”

Pinder says the program has already expanded into New Jersey and Pennsylvania. And he hopes to expand it to downstate Delaware in the future.

Pinder says the VetNet Flag Program partnered with VFW Post 475 in Newark for Monday’s retirement ceremony.

He says since the program began in April 2017, more than 300 American flags have been replaced around the region.

Pinder says they will replace flags for individual homes, nonprofits and businesses, whether they are a Comcast customer or not.
