A specialized savings accounts that protects the benefits of individuals with disabilities is now a year old. And the state treasurer wants more people to know about it.

State Treasurer Colleen Davis is marking the first anniversary of the Delaware ABLE Plan with a renewed effort to increase awareness of it - launching a new campaign and video about it.

"The Delaware ABLE Plan is the fund that has been established to assist residents with disabilities in saving for their future,” said Treasurer Davis.

The plan allows people with disabilities to save for qualified disability expenses without losing eligibility for assistance programs like Medicaid.

Davis notes the First State is one of 43 states that have ABLE plans, but work to get the word out here has just started in year one, “It was our sort of groundwork phase. And we’re now moving on to an expansion phase through our campaign and video.”

Treasurer Davis says so far in 2019, she and her staff have reached over 3,000 people through direct, in-person outreach at dozens of events and community meetings.
