State Police identify teenager killed in gun battle with Trooper

Delaware State Police

The Delaware State Police have identified the sixteen-year-old fatally shot by a State Trooper over the weekend as Juliun Pitcher, of Smyrna.

The incident took place during a traffic stop around 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning in Dover.

State police say the Trooper approached the vehicle, Pitcher displayed a handgun, and an exchange of gunfire followed. State police also say detectives did recover a handgun from the scene.

Pitcher was shot during the exchange and later died at the hospital. The 18-year-old driver of the vehicle was shot in the leg, treated and released, and the 17-year-old passenger in the backseat of the car was uninjured.

The State Trooper involved was also not hurt, and has been placed on administrative leave.

The investigation headed by the Delaware Homicide Unit is ongoing.
