Just in time for the holidays, the DMV is releasing just over 3,000 five-digit license plates.
The low digit numbers are something of a status symbol, with some single or double digit plates fetching six figures when sold or auctioned off.
Delaware DMV Director Scott Vien says this batch of the plates will be available Tuesday, November 7.
"Everybody in Delaware loves plates and everybody gets excited about that. So we try to take advantage of that and offer something exciting for our customers by releasing what we have on hand in the five-digit plate world,” said Vien.
Vien adds the low-digit plates have a long tradition in the First State because they can be held on to and passed down.
“And the fact that we recycle numbers and because of that, it enables somebody to hold onto a number and then ultimately, kind of show the early adopters of the plate world some family history, ,just like people have had phone numbers in their family history for many years," said Vien.
Vien says license plate numbers cannot be reserved in advance or over the phone. And the promotion will only run as long as supplies last.
Customers must purchase plates at a DMV location and the five-digit number will be assigned. If you purchase a five-digit plate, you will have to give up your current license plate number assigned to your vehicle.
The purchase price for the reproduction plate from the Delaware Historic Plate Company is $110.
