Driving warning issued, schools close in New Castle County

Gov. John Carney put a Level 1 driving warning in effect at midnight in New Castle County only as schools there tell students and teachers to stay home Tuesday.

The Level 1 warning os not a driving ban.  It simply encourages nonessential employees - public and private- to only drive for significant safety, health or business reasons. And if you drive, exercise extra caution.

State offices in New Castle County are closed, along with New Castle County and city of Wilmington government offices. The City of Newark is now closed.  It had initially planned to open at 10:30 Tuesday morning.

And with the heaviest snow is anticipated in New Castle County, Appoquinmink, Brandywine, Christina, Colonial New Castle County Vo-Tech and Red Clay school districts have all announced they are closed.

The University of Delaware’s main campus in Newark and other New Castle County locations will open at noon. Delaware State University's main campus will open 2 hours late.  DSU's Wilmington campus opens at noon.  Delaware Tech’s Wilmington and Stanton campuses are closed.  Goldey-Beacom College is closed.

Dover Air Force Base says emergency and MEL1 personnel are to report as normal Tuesday. All other personnel have delayed reporting until 2 p.m.

The U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts in Wilmington are closed.
