DE Turf Sports Complex locks down Easter field hockey tournament
High school field hockey players from around the country will help christen Delaware’s newest sports complex early next year.
Up to 150 teams could attend College Connection's Shooting Star Field Hockey Tournament Showcase during Easter weekend this spring with families, coaches and college scouts in tow.
Chris Giacomucci, DE Turf Sports Complex’s executive director, says they’re also in talks to host lacrosse and soccer tournaments - and open to booking other activities.
“Adult leagues, youth leagues, recreation, camps, clinics, education sessions, special events, concerts, battle of the bands. It doesn’t take a lot to maintain these fields, so if you can dream it up on turf, we can do it,” Giacomucci said.
Half of the 12 multipurpose, artificial turf fields have been completed, with the rest expected to be constructed by Christmas.
Concession stands and an on-site restaurant will also be ready for the first tournament of the season.
In all, the complex is expected to bring $18 million to the local economy every year.
“We’re going to fill the hotel rooms, the impact that it’s going to bring to the restaurants and also just the impact that it’s going to bring to this Dover to Milford corridor is really exciting.”
The multimillion-dollar complex came to fruition this year four years after officials held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event and nearly 10 years after it was first proposed.
