Wilmington Police Department
Suspect Beatriz Fana-Ruiz

The Delaware State Fire Marshal announced Thursday it’s charging 27-year-old Beatriz Fana-Ruiz for the deaths of two Wilmington firefighters killed battling a fire at her Canby Park home this past Saturday.

The Wilmington Police Department arrested Fana-Ruiz Thursday morning and is charging her with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree arson and seven counts of reckless endangerment.

Lt. Christopher Leach and Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes died after being trapped in the basement of the Canby Park home when the first floor collapsed.

Two other firefighters were also injured in the blaze. They’re being treated at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Pennsylvania.

Ardythe Hope is in critical but stable condition. Brad Speakman has been upgraded to stable condition.

A public memorial service for Fickes and Leach will be held at 1 pm Saturday at the Chase Center on Wilmington’s Riverfront.
