April 10th kicks off Seventh Annual Week of Service

Individuals and companies across the First State are gearing up for the Seventh Annual Week of Service, kicking off April 10th.

Nancy Greene, Programs Manager with Sussex County’s Habitat for Humanity, says volunteers are key to fulfilling Habitat for Humanity’s mission.

She’s happy that Dogfish Head has partnered with them for many years, shutting down their brewery and two restaurants one day while their employees help frame houses.

Money for supplies used that day is raised through a Beer and Benevolence night at Dogfish Head.

“April 11th is the celebration and the sweat. These guys come out here, they swing hammers and work in teams to erect the walls," Greene said. "They sign the walls with messages for the families. They build in their good wishes.”

Greene says Dogfish Head’s involvement helps advance their build schedule by up to two weeks.

While April 11th is reserved for Dogfish Head employees, there are many volunteer opportunities available with Sussex County’s Habitat for Humanity along with many other organizations throughout the week.

Stephen Williams, Director of Airport Operations for Delaware River and Bay Authority, says volunteers role play different crisis scenarios involving casualties that airports could encounter.

Airports like New Castle Airport are required every three years to hold a full-scale emergency exercise, testing communication, response and recovery preparedness to address potential disasters.

“It’s a variety of things they help us do, but essentially they help us greatly in defining the realism of the whole event," Williams said.

According to the Corporation for National Community Service, nearly 193,000 Delawareans formally volunteered in 2014, contributing 21.4 million hours of service to nonprofit and community organizations.

Opportunities can be found at VolunteerDelaware.org.
