State working to offer MLK Day of Service volunteering opportunites

Clothing drives, community cleanups and rehabbing buildings are among the volunteer events happening Monday for an annual event honoring a civil rights icon.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was designated a National Day of Service by Congress in 1994 for citizens to give back, while honoring the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy.

“And to help us understand how we as citizens can help meet national challenges on issues such as increasing economic opportunity, education and supporting important causes in our community by ourselves not essentially through governmental services but we as citizens taking action,” said Faith Mwaura of the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services.

The agency is teaming up with the State Office of Volunteerism and community organizations to offer volunteer opportunities throughout the state Monday.

“That dream that Dr. King talked about is still alive and well today. That essentially a person, an individual, can create and help us sustain what America is for future generations,” said Mwaura.

You can learn more about what volunteering opportunities are available at the State Office of Volunteerism's website.
