State to auction more low number surf fishing licenses

James Dawson/Delaware Public Media

Two more low-digit surf fishing tag auctions are set for this spring with a third planned for the fall.

State Parks officials say the first online auction of 2016 kicks off March 29th. 15 tags will be up for bid in a live auction April 9th at the Delaware State Fair’s Triple Threat BBQ, Beer & Music festival.

Those include tag numbers 4, 7, 10, 200 and 400, among others.

Tags are styled after the much sought after low-digit porcelain auto license plates with a black and white motif and raised letters. They allow owners to drive onto designated areas of Delaware beaches to cast their fishing poles into the ocean.

The first low-digit tag auction held last fall sold 60 tags in all, raising more than $270,000, which goes directly towards Delaware State Parks.

Bidders vying for the coveted number one tag will have to wait until October 22nd for the second live auction of the year at DNREC’s second annual Booo-B-Que event at Seashore State Park.
