Fire damage at Legislative Hall tops $1 million

James Dawson/Delaware Public Media

State officials estimate damage from a recent fire at Legislative Hall totaling $1.5 million.

Restoration contractors have been cleaning and remediating fire, smoke and water damage for weeks, as well as cleaning and replacing ductwork in the attic where the fire started.

The capitol building opened to the public for the first time since the fire Wednesday for a special Senate session, but will close again aside from early budget hearings starting next week.

State officials were testing a backup generator, which later ignited combustible material in the attic.

About 160 historical portraits and paintings owned by the state need to be cleaned – 11 of which need professional restoration work.

Legislative Hall itself will reopen  to the public and for tours Nov. 6.
