Legislative Hall fire ruled accidental

A fire at Delaware's Legislative Hall Wednesday appears to have started accidentally, according to officials.

Dover's fire marshal ruled Thursday that the fire was started by a generator exhaust pipe in the state capitol's attic.

In a city release, fire marshal Tim Mullaney says the pipe "caused nearby combustibles within the attic space to ignite during a full load test of the generator."

The fire spread across the north side of the building on Wednesday afternoon. It caused what's been described as extensive damage, as well as from smoke and water. A Capitol Police Officer and Little Creek firefighter were treated and released for injuries sustained at the scene.

City and state officials are consulting with contractors to assess the damage at Leg Hall. And they're working to clean up the building to allow employees to return.  Legislative Hall was closed Thursday. It will remain closed Friday and Monday - reopening Tuesday at the earliest.
