Student arrested at Newark High with loaded handgun

Police have arrested a 9th grader at Newark High School Thursday for possession of a loaded semi-automatic handgun on school property.
Around 2:00 pm school officials and the Newark police school resource officer were engaged in a discussion with the 15 year-old Wilmington resident regarding an unrelated matter.

While searching his backpack they discovered the weapon and placed the student in custody.

He was arrested and taken to the Newark Police Station for processing.

Police have not released the student’s name or any other details as of this time.

Delaware law prohibits any juvenile from possessing a firearm or other deadly weapon while in or on determined Safe School and Recreation Zones.

Students caught with a firearm or other deadly weapon are to be expelled for no less than 180 days - although the terms of the expulsion can be modified by school boards on a case-by-case basis.
