Slam Dunk to the Beach is latest coronavirus cancellation

Another event that draws tourism to Delaware is cancelled as a precaution during the pandemic.

The Slam Dunk to the Beach high school basketball tournament will not be held at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes this year.

It was scheduled for December.

The tournament is one of the premier high school level contests in the country, drawing on the nation’s top college and NBA prospects, along with recruiters from elite colleges.

Slam Dunk has featured more than 60 players who have gone on to play in the NBA.

In a statement, Chairman of the nonprofit Delaware Sports Commission Dr. Matthew Robinson said “At the center of [the] decision was the safety and well- being of [the] participants, and spectators.” He adds “the prudent decision was to hold off until 2021.”

This would have been the tournament’s seventh year since being revived in 2014.

It generates more than $1 million a year for Sussex County, according to the Delaware Sports Commission.
