WNBA star Elena Delle Donne named Delaware's top athlete again

The Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association (DSBA) has named its Delaware Athlete of the Year.

WNBA star Elena Delle Donne is Delaware’s Athlete of the Year for a fourth time.

The Delaware Sportswriters & Broadcasters Association (DSBA) gave the former Ursuline Academy and University of Delaware star the award at its 71st annual awards luncheon Monday.

She’s the first-ever four-time winner of the award.

The 30-year-old Delle Donne won the WNBA MVP for a second time last year as she led her team, the Washington Mystics, to its first league title.

Delle Donne first won the award in 2008 after leading Ursuline to one of four state championships. She won the award again during her college career at UD in 2010 and 2012.

Delle Donne is home recovering from back surgery and could not attend Monday’s luncheon. The president of Ursuline Academy, Trisha Medeiros, accepted the award on her behalf.

The DSBA also handed out four other awards Monday.

Appoquinimink’s unbeaten state baseball champs were honored as the 2019 state Team of the Year. The Tubby Raymond Coach of the Year is Salesianum School swim coach Chip Hannig.

Milford High grad and Salisbury University wide receiver Octavion Wilson took home the Buddy Hurlock Unsung Hero Award. And the founder and director of the Diamond State girls hoop tournament, John Gretchen, received the Herm Reitzes Award for Public Service.
