Dover International Speedway’s 50th anniversary celebration this year will include a major change to its NASCAR garage area.
Track officials announced Monday the Monster Mile is getting a new, expanded NASCAR Cup Series garage.
The new garage will be between Turns 1 and 2 on the infield.
The current one - closer to Turn 1 - has been in place since the track’s first race 50 years ago in July 1969.
The $5.5 million project will create a garage that’s 20 percent larger than what the track has now, growing from1 8,400 sq. feet to 23,100. It will have 44 large, 15 by 30 foot garage bays with individual doors for cars and their teams.
Work begins next week, immediately after Sunday’s Cup series race. It’s expected to be finished by Sept. 20, a couple of weeks ahead of Dover’s fall NASCAR weekend Oct. 4-6
That weekend will include the track’s 100th NASCAR Cup Series race – making Dover International Speedway the 10th track in the nation to host the Cup Series 100 or more times.
