Wilmington hosts third annual Riverfront New Year's celebration

Delaware Public Media

The Riverfront Development Corporation is partnering with the City of Wilmington for a New Year’s Eve celebration on the city’s Riverfront Monday.

The third annual Family Fun Night starts at 6pm.

It culminates with a 9 o’clock fireworks show at the Riverfront.

The Riverfront rink on Justison Street serves as the site of the celebration and the unofficial viewing party for the fireworks show.

There will be two ice skating sessions, each two hours long, including one during the fireworks show.

Del Pez, a Mexican gastropub, will be on-site serving Mexican food and craft beer, and hot chocolate will be available to all in attendance.

RDC marketing manager Joe Valenti says the event fills the need for a family friendly New Year’s Eve event in Wilmington.

Valenti says, “Traditionally, New Year’s Eve has been a time when we’ve had fireworks shows, events, family friendly events, throughout the city, and in recent years, there hasn’t been much in the way of that in the city of Wilmington, within city limits.”

Valenti adds that the earlier start time for the event is perfect for those with children.

“We wanted to have something a little bit earlier, so it’s the 9 o’clock time frame. So that way if you are with young children you can come to the Riverfront, enjoy the ice skating at the Riverfront rink, have some food and drinks there, and then watch an early fireworks show at 9 o’clock”, Valenti says.

Parking is free along the Riverfront.
