UD baseball falls in opening NCAA tourney contest

The University of Delaware baseball team came up short in its first NCAA tournament appearance in 16 years.

The Blue Hens fell to Texas Tech 5-2 in its opening contest in the regional round.

UD hung with the Red Raiders, ranked as high as fifth nationally, most of the way.  The trailed just 3-2 in the 8th inning before Texas Tech’s Orlando Garcia hit a two run homer to put the game away.

Blue Hen starting pitcher Ron Marinaccio did his part to keep Delaware in the contest.  He allowed just 3 runs on 4 hits in 6 and a third innings.

The game was delayed for an hour and 42 minutes in the second inning due to a thunderstorm.

The loss drops the Hens into an elimination game at 3 pm Saturday against Arizona, which lost its opening contest to Sam Houston State 5-4 Friday.
