For a second straight year - Wesley College quarterback Joe Callahan is on the short list for Division III football’s version of the Heisman Trophy.

Callahan is one of 10 semifinalists for the Gagliardi Trophy, which recognizes excellence on the field, in the classroom and in community service.

Last year, Callahan was one of the four finalists for award.

The senior signal caller leads Division III this season with 3,809 yards passing and 43 touchdowns while participating in various community projects, including Wesley College SAAC Food Drive to benefit the Food Bank of Delaware.

Only two other Wesley players have ever been in contention for the award - running back Brandon Steinheim  in 1996 and safety Rocky Myers in 2003 and 2004.  Myers won the award in 2004,  the only defensive player ever to take home the trophy and only player from an East Coast school to earn the honor.

The four finalists for this year’s Gagliardi Trophy will be named December 8th,  with the winner announced December 16th as part of the festivities surrounding the Division III title game – the Stagg Bowl.

Callahan and the Wolverines visit Johns Hopkins for a second round NCAA playoff game this Saturday in Baltimore after defeating Framingham State 42-22 in an opening round contest in Dover last Saturday.
