Inaugural Escape from Lewes swim competition canceled due to weather

Competitive swimmers expecting to leap from the Cape-May Lewes ferry this weekend will have to change their plans. The inaugural Escape from Lewes Open Water Classic has been canceled this weekend due to hazardous weather.

Authorities determined that an offshore low-pressure system moving through the area will create rough conditions in the Delaware Bay that could be dangerous to athletes.

The event was scheduled to take place Sunday, the 27th, at the Lewes Ferry Terminal. Swimmers were able to sign up for either the 5k or 1 mile races. The event was produced by DelMoSports, a New Jersey-based boutique sports company that also plans Escape the Cape.

Officials expected the event to draw about 1,000 participants. All registrants will automatically receive a comp entry to next year’s Escape from Lewes competition.
