Wesley College’s head football coach can reach a major milestone Saturday when the Wolverines play their 2015 home opener.
With a victory over Christopher Newport in Dover would give Mike Drass 200-career victories.
Fewer than 75 college football coaches all-time have notched 200 wins at any level. And just over two dozen – including former UD coach Tubby Raymond - have managed the feat at one school as Drass is attempting to do this week.
Drass takes his first stab at 200 on the same day Wesley honors him by officially naming the field at Scott Miller stadium “Mike Drass Field.”
Drass says appreciates the recognition, though he has some trouble embracing it.
“I’m kind of uncomfortable. It’s awkward," said Drass. "I’m very grateful and appreciate the college thinking of me. But its hard for me to accept that when [offensive coordinator] Chip Knapp has been with me here every step of the way. And we’ve had a bunch of other [assistant] coaches step on that field and a bunch of players. So, that field is for everybody, not just one person.”
Drass' career record stands at 199-54-1 with 11 NCAA playoff appearances and six trips to the national semifinals.
This year, Wolverines are currently ranked 5th in Division III after a 44-3 season opening win at Frostburg two weeks ago.
Saturdays’s game with 1-1 Christopher Newport begins at 1pm. CNU split its first two games of the season at home, beating the College of New Jersey, then losing to Hampden-Sydney.
