2015 Slam Dunk to the Beach draws highly-ranked schools from out of state

The 2015 edition of Slam Dunk to the Beach high school basketball tournament is bringing some top-notch schools from around the nation to the First State later this year.

The Delaware Sports Commission, which revived the holiday hoops event last December, unveiled 12 out-of-state teams that have signed on to play at Cape Henlopen High School the week after Christmas this year.

That group features a trio of teams that finished last season in the USA Today national top 25.  Philadelphia’s Roman Catholic - ranked 16th a year ago - tops that list.  Roselle Catholic from New Jersey and another Philly squad, Saints Neumann-Goretti will also there.  They were ranked 20th and 22nd respectively last year.

The out of state teams join six participating Delaware teams announced in March.  That group included a pair of 2015 state tournament semi-finalists, Sanford and Mount Pleasant.

A 19th and final team will be announced at a later date.

Slam Dunk officials say last year’s tourney drew over 10,000 spectators and contributed more than $1 million to the local economy during its 3 day run.

This year’s Slam Dunk will be held December 27-29 in Lewes.  Three-day passes are on sale now for $55 dollars at the tournament's website.
