Thousands of ratepayers to be reimbursed after Delmarva Power billing error

Delaware Public Media

A complaint from one Delmarva Power customer is leading to refunds for thousands of other customers.

Delaware Public Advocate Drew Slater says a Delmarva Power ratepayer from New Castle County contacted his office last month with a question about their utility bill.

The issue was brought to Delmarva Power which learned it had double-billed thousands of customers for a late payment fee—some dating back as far as 2015.

Slater says the error has been fixed and affected ratepayers will be reimbursed on their next bill.

“These customers should see a credit back on their bill most likely this week,” said Slater. “So there’s nothing that any customers have to do.”

Slater reminds utility payers to double check their bill. He says it’s not uncommon for one complaint to lead to a change in public utility policy affecting other customers.

“It’s really incumbent on customers to review their bills. Just as in this case, if the customer hadn’t contacted us, it’s entirely possible the error wouldn’t have been found at this point,” he said.

The average refund to customers for this latest error is $15.
