Delaware Shakespeare to host virtual theatrical game show fundraiser

Delaware Shakespeare is moving its annual fundraiser event next month online - due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event is called “Play On”  and is set for  Friday, October 2, 2020.

David Stradley, Del Shakes producing artistic director, says it will look and feel like some popular reality shows.

He says four teams of well-known Delawareans - coached by Del Shakes artists - will compete - performing scenes from Shakepeare’s plays to see who can raise the most donations for Delaware Shakespeare.

“We’re very happy to have Tina Betz and Rick Betz; Tina is the director of cultural affairs for the City of Wilmington and Rick is a restaurateur and a big personality," said Stradley. "Also in the hospitality industry, we have Michelle Mitchell who is the former executive pastry chef at the Hotel du Pont and is now running her own pastry business.”

Stradley says Mitchell’s husband, Chuck Lewis, will join her on stage to brawl as the inhospitable lovers Kate and Petruchio from “The Taming of the Shrew.”

LGBTQ activist and State Senate candidate Sarah McBride is also scheduled to participate, along with Guillermina Gonzalez and her husband Charles Sobrero.

McBride takes on one of Shakespere’s best heroines, Rosalind from “As You Like It.”

And Gonzalez and Sobrero will showcase their control of Spanish and English in a role of Viola and Orsino from “Twelfth Night.”

Tickets start at $90 and ticket holders will be sent a link in order to access the event at 7 p.m. - again on October 2, 2020.
