Another concert series recently became a coronavirus casualty.
The Riverfront Development Corporation recently canceled its Summer Concert Series.
But there is good news - something is coming to replace it.
The Summer Concer Series event is normally held Thursday nights in July and August on Wilmington’s Riverfront.
“With all of the restrictions from the staged reopening plan, while the concert would have been in July and August and would have been outdoors so we would have been able to put something on in a limited capacity, we really just made this decision just based on the priority of the health and safety of our guests,” said Riverfront Development Corporation marketing manager Joe Valenti.
But the RDC is going to try something else in ts place, partnering with The Grand to offer a drive-in concert series at Frawley Stadium starting in July.
“Concerts by Car” debuts Friday, July 3, 2020 with the Rock Orchestra performing a Beatles greatest hits concert.
And The Grand’s executive director Mark Fields believes people will show up.
“We think that there’s going to be a lot of pent up demand for entertainment," said Fields. "People have had to entertain themselves at home with their TV’s and their laptops for a long time and although that’s fine, that doesn’t replicate the experience of live performance.”
Fields says people can stay in their cars and listen to the show over FM radio or sit in lawn chairs next to their vehicle since cars will be spaced out to maintain social distancing.
Tickets are on sale at The Grand's website.
