Flu has spread statewide in Delaware

State health officials say the flu has spread to all three Delaware counties.

A 26-year-old woman from Kent County and a seven-year-old boy from Sussex represent the latest lab-confirmed flu cases in the First State.

This comes less than a week after an eight-year old in New Castle County caught the virus.

These are the first three flu cases of Delaware’s 2019-2020 flu season, which started two weeks ago. All of the cases are type B influenza.

Delaware’s Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay urges Delawareans to not delay in getting their flu vaccination.

“Vaccination is not just about protecting yourself, it's also about protecting your children who are quite vulnerable to effects of the flu,” said Rattay in a statement.

The state recommends the flu vaccine for all Delawareans 6 months or older.

Last flu season Delaware recorded more than 6,300 laboratory-confirmed flu cases with more than 1,000 hospitalizations and 24 deaths.

The year before was a record-breaking season in the First State with roughly 9,000 confirmed flu cases and 35 flu-related deaths.
