Nemours, Bayhealth partner on addition to new Sussex Campus

Nicholas Ciolino

Nemours is adding its presence to the new medical campus in Sussex County.

The pediatric health system is spending $15 million for its share of a three story medical office across the street from Bayhealth’s recently opened hospital in Milford. The two structures sit on 169 acres off Route 1.

Nemours will occupy the ground floor of the new building with pediatric primary care and specialty offices as well as offices for limited senior care.

Nemours CEO Dr. Roy Proujansky says this will save many Nemours patients living downstate from having to drive up to Wilmington for care.

“We’re going to have cardiology; we’re going to have gastroenterology—all of the pediatric medical specialties,” said Proujansky. “We’ve looked at our own demographics, we’ve looked at the patients we’re already serving, and so we’re starting with the ones that we know we’ve already got a population that we’re caring for and so let’s start with them and make it easier.”

The second and third floors of the new medical office will be rented out to Bayhealth physicians. Officials say this will add primary care offices in a county with more than 2,000 patients per primary care physician.

“What we know is that there is a supply and demand issue for physicians in this part of the state and so as we recruit more physicians and so as we recruit physicians this is the site that will place many of those physicians in this building,” said Bayhealth CEO Terry Murphy.

Bayhealth officials say the design of the full structure is not complete and the total cost is not yet determined. The new facility is expected to be up and running early next year.
