Christiana Care receives money for cancer research

Delaware Public Media

Christiana Care Health System will dive deeper into research on head and neck cancer, thanks to a generous donation from a Pennsylvania family.

Christiana Care’s Head and Neck Cancer Multidisciplinary Center has seen an over 90 percent increase in head and neck cancer cases in the First State. These cases often involve cancers in the voice box and nasal cavity.

Now, after receiving $1 million from the Bacchieri Family Fund, Christiana Care will be able to focus more on clinical care and research into those growing numbers.

The Bacchieri Family Fund was created by Gregg and Stacey Bacchieri from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

Gregg was diagnosed with throat cancer just three years ago, but received what he called “excellent care” in Newark. He says he now wants to give back.

The National Cancer Institute says head and neck cancer rates are rising nationwide. They now account for about three percent of all cancers in the United States.
