YWCA Delaware launches Dialogue to Action "How to Be an Antiracist" book study

The YWCA Delaware launches a community book study series this week focused on New York Times best-selling author Dr. Ibram Kendi.

The Dialogue to Action book study series on Kendi’s book “How to Be an Antiracist” was actually planned last year, but YWCA Delaware’s director of racial and social justice Becca Cotto says recent events surrounding racial injustice have ramped interest.

“It just became super relevant obviously because of everything that’s been happening," said Cotto. "And this particular book is actually the #1 Best Seller for the last three weeks on the New York Times nonfiction list.”

And Cotto says to allow as many people to participate as possible, at least 14 different virtual book groups are planned.

“We’re trying to do this as a community effort. So there are other organizations hosting their own within their own offices or their own structures; there are some churches, there are some nonprofits, there are some individuals even," said Cotto. "We are hosting 14 of our own, but we’re also encouraging others to host their own.”

Cotto says YWCA Delaware will provide group guidelines and instructions. Each group will meet weekly for six weeks, starting Sunday, July 12, 2020 and finishing August 22, 2020.

Cotto says the main message is that racism will not be solved by reading “How to Be an Antiracist”, but it is a beginning - highlighting things people may not be aware of.

More information on joining the book study is available at the YWCA Delaware website.
