Leadership in the State Senate announced committee assignments for the upcoming General Assembly session.
Democrat Trey Paradee is the new Senate co-chair of the budget-writing Joint Finance Committee, replacing Harris McDowell who retired.
The House will also have a new JFC co-chair after Democrat Quinn Johnson decided not to seek reelection.
Nicole Poore, who lost her spot as Senate Majority Leader, will be the Senate co-chair of the Capital Improvement committee which crafts the state’s Bond Bill.
“The assignments I’m laying out today give each of our members an opportunity to lead and, given our Caucus’s new supermajority, the people of Delaware can be assured that our values will be reflected in the bills that come to us for a floor vote,” said New Senate President Pro Temp David Sokola in a statement.
Sokola also announced some committee-related changes for the upcoming session.
Democrats will now comprise two-thirds of all Senate committees, reflecting their super-majority in that chamber.
The Senate Environment and Energy Committees merged and a new Housing Committee was created.
“All policies governing generation and distribution of energy in Delaware should ever carefully weigh the potential impact on our environment,” Sokola said in his statement. “Ensuring all Delawareans have fair and equal access to affordable housing is too important for us to fold this issue into otherwise unrelated committees. These changes will elevate and properly balance how we consider these issues of primary importance to so many Delawareans.”
Lawmakers are slated to open their new session January 12th.
