State officials remind Delawareans REAL ID deadline is coming

DMV
State officials are asking Delawareans to check their driver’s license or ID card for a gold star in the top right corner.";

Delawareans who do not already have a REAL ID, must get one in the next eight months.

If your current Delaware driver’s license does not have a gold star in the top right corner, it is not a REAL ID.

“REAL ID is a federally compliant identification that can be a driver’s license or it can be an identification card. And it basically means that you have gone through the process of validating who you are by using various pieces of information,” said Shelley Koon, chief of communications for the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

She says the deadline to get the REAL ID is October 1, 2020.

“What it means is if you miss the deadline, if you don’t have a REAL ID federally compliant credential, you will need to show additional information to show who you are before you board a domestic flight or before you enter a federal building,” Koon said.

Koon explains that REAL ID requires a one-time revalidation of all identity documentation, like your Social Security card or a birth certificate.

She notes that a majority of Delawareans have already gotten a REAL ID.

“Delaware is 72% compliant on being REAL ID. And across the State, it varies from state to state. But we are excited to say that we do have a very high percentage right now," said Koon. "So we’re just trying to get that little last bit to get in here before the cut-off date."
