The Presbyterian Church of Dover is remembering victims of the coronavirus pandemic with a memorial.
If you walk by the church on S. State Street, you’ll see colorful tubes stacked together on the church’s front lawn.
The church’s interim pastor Reverend Duke Dixon says each tube represents a person in Delaware who lost their life to coronavirus.
“Actually my wife is the one who came up with the idea," said Dixon. "And we were able to obtain all these different tubes that we could assemble in some way that would honor the COVID victims. It’s a gift that we want to give to our community.”
Dixon says the tubes are made of hard cardboard and were donated by a commercial rope-making company in Chester Township, Pennsylvania.
“We have placed a light in each one of these tubes so the light shines from the back of the tube representing the life that has been lost and also as a remembrance of these people as hopefully their light continues to shine in our lives and in our remembrances.”
The memorial will stay up until the end of July and Dixon encourages people to stop by to pray or sit in silence for a moment of reflection.
According to the Division of Public Health, 1,677 people have died in Delaware from COVID since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.
Dixon says the lights are on every night from 7 p.m. until midnight and will be through the end of July. Again, he encourages people to stop by to pray or reflect in silence.
The Church is also providing post-it notes for people to write the name of lost loved ones on and place inside a tube to remember that person.
