Newark Mayor Polly Sierer emailed City Council members Friday morning that she had decided not to seek a third term as mayor.
The Newark Post had reported in December that Sierer intended to run.
Her Friday announcement said the decision was made after “further and careful consideration," but did not give a reason.
In her statement, she called it a “pleasure and honor” to serve the citizens as mayor. She said she “appreciate[s] the confidence the community has had in [her]” to serve as mayor for nearly six years. She was elected in a seven-way special election in 2013.
Sierer is encouraging residents to get involved and consider running for the office. The filing deadline is Feb. 4.
As of end of day Friday, only two candidates had filed for the mayoral race: Catherine Ciferni and 21-year-old University of Delaware student Kasai Guthrie. The election is April 9.
