The Food Bank of Delaware is looking to give away truckloads of perishable food to the needy before it goes to waste.
The Trump administration is buying up commodities to help farmers hurt by the trade war with China and other countries. They’re goods other countries are no longer importing from the U.S. because of the tariffs placed on them.
Food Bank of Delaware CEO Patricia Beebe said she’s looking for partner agencies to help distributing the trade mitigation food to eligible Delawareans before it goes bad.
“But, I’m concerned because everyone says that this trade mitigation product is going to continue throughout this year, maybe into next year,” she said.
Beebe notes some of the trade mitigation products easily spoil. The items include fruit, eggs and milk.
She said they’ve been holding pop-up mobile pantries to hand out the food before it spoils.
“We will go to an area that we know is very low income and there’s a lot of those in the state of Delaware," she said. "We all can think of where they are. And we make sure that we don’t hand out food to anyone unless they income qualify.”
Gov. John Carney, who toured the new food bank facility in Newark Monday, said he’ll work to identify opportunities in state government to help with the distribution of the perishable commodities.
