Fewer COVID-19 deaths reported Saturday, case trends up slightly

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

New COVID-19 related deaths in the First State fell back into the single digits Saturday.

State health officials reported 5 new deaths after 11 were added to the state’s death toll Friday.

The total number of deaths statewide since the pandemic began is now 361.

The latest victims were between 60 to 80 years-old. Three lived in New Castle County –and one each were from Kent County and Sussex Counties. All five had underlying health conditions and three were long-term care facility residents.

New positive cases jumped by 186 Saturday, bringing the total to 9,422 since March 11th.  And the 5-day percentages of new cases and percent of people testing were also up slightly. The average of new cases is back above 100 for the first time in a week and the percent of positive tests edged back up close to 9.

But current hospitalizations continue to decrease, down nine to 174.  That’s the lowest level since April 9th. 32 people are critically ill.

And more Delawareans are recovering from the disease.  State health officials report 102 additional recoveries.  The overall total is now tops 5,200.
